A Frivolous Distinction - Fashion and Needlework in the works of Jane Austen. Author Penelope Byrde is Keeper of Costume for Bath Museum Services. Her small paperback is a study of information about fashion references in the novels of Jane Austen.

Of note, there are 16 color illustrations of clothing and needlework. The book has 6 chapters such as "Women's Dress" and "Dressing for Special Occasions" with each chapter having an introduction, discussion of the subject, and quotes from Austen's works. Book includes a helpful reference guide to textile terms used in the novels.

A great deal of expert information is packed into the 42 pages of this little gem. The title is a quote from Jane, "Dress is at all times a frivolous distinction..."

Great reference for Jane Austen scholars, novelists and those interested in re-creating the fashions of the time.
